How online races work

Train against the AI’s perfect lap.

Before you race, chase the AI. It laps the track until it finds the fastest clean lap and shows it to you as a ghost and a line on the road. Then race up to five AI rivals, one lap or ninety-nine.

HotCar Racing is written by AI coding agents and runs on Sites, OpenAI’s hosting inside ChatGPT. Play on your phone, tablet or laptop with touch, tilt or a controller, nothing to install. Log in with ChatGPT and your laps, setups and tracks follow you.

Our race track laid on a glossy black circuit board: gold circuit lines, a few of them lit blue, run to a chip with the OpenAI logo in polished metal, while the red GT3 and the blue AI ghost race past on the track.

HotCar is built on the 1:50 hybrid race tracks people build on their floor. Bring yours.

  1. Your layout. Paste the track code from the Carrera HYBRID app: same pieces, same order, real size.
  2. Your Modes. Arcade, Simulation and Simulation+, as in the app. Tilt your phone to steer, like there.
  3. Train on the go. Lap the AI’s line on the bus, then race it on your floor. Our cars are measured to within 0.9 mm.

How do online races work?

Up to six cars share a grid, real drivers and at least one AI, and every car is just a colour. Watching, you guess who drove the car you followed, then you see the truth. Racing, you see how many spectators thought you were the AI. You need a free ChatGPT account.

Is this an official hybrid app?

No. HotCar Racing is an independent project, not made or endorsed by Carrera or any car maker; our car names are our own. We love the real thing, though: a Carrera HYBRID set puts the race on your floor.

Does it control my real cars?

No. It all happens on screen. HotCar never connects to your real track, your cars or the controllers you race with.

Do I need a hybrid racing set?

No. The built-in tracks work on their own. A set only matters when you want to bring your own layout or build ours at home.

What does the AI actually do?

It drives your car on your track until it finds the fastest clean lap, then shows it as a line, a ghost and rivals.

Does it drive like a real car?

The layout is exact. The handling is our own model, still being tuned during the test, not a measured copy of a real car.

Does it run on phone and laptop?

Yes, in the browser: touch sticks or a paired game controller on a phone, keyboard or controller on a laptop. Not every device is tested.

Can I put my banner on the track?

Yes: donate 100 € or more to a recognised charity and your banner stands beside our tracks for a year. How it works.

Do I need an account to play?

No. As a guest your laps stay on this device; log in with ChatGPT to keep them everywhere. Online races need it.
